Description: Before Peter Maw ever got into Set Dancing he used to play the Tin Whistle. His love for Irish music & culture led him to an Irish Language course in Co Donegal in the north west of Ireland. It was here that he first danced an Irish Set, though he had previously been taught Irish Step Dancing at home by his mother. From there he stayed in Ireland another six months and caught the bug of dancing the sets. That was back in 1990 and started teaching almost the moment he returned to England. From there the classes became regular - doing three per week - and he was approached to do his first workshop at a festival the following summer. He has been teaching the Sets for 20 years and has organised many events.
He started doing workshops at Folk Festivals 19 years ago, his first one being Whitby Folk Festival. In addition he has also taught at Barnsley, Bedford, Beverley, Cambridge, Derby, Holmfirth, Leeds, Lichfield, Sheffield, Sidmouth and Wadebridge Folk Festivals. He has also taught at Irish Centres and other venues in Bradford, Bristol, Doncaster, Hull, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Sheffield, Telford and Wolverhampton; and abroad in Ireland, France and the USA.
He has also organised Irish Set Dance Weekends in Barnsley, South Yorkshire; Hope Valley, Derbyshire; and Warwick. He has an Irish background and his mother taught Irish Step Dancing for about 60 years, also playing the fiddle while she taught.
He is now currently holding a monthly workshop on the 3rd Sunday of the month in Leintwardine Village Hall. It is a Sunday Set Dance Workshop, mainly for beginners at the
moment, though could do with some more experienced dancers to help with all the beginners! |
