We have another exciting & varied dance programme, with nearly sixty events to choose from! The main programme comprises a balanced mix of English & American workshops & dances, plus workshops for musicians & callers. Chippenham takes particular pride in its English dance heritage, so there is a full programme of English dance, including a Playford Ball. American dance is highly popular, and is featured in all its forms; but Contra dancing (America’s answer to Ceilidh dancing) is still all the rage, so there will be afternoon Contra Dances in the Neeld Hall, plus the ever-popular, high-energy Zesty Contra-Dance in the Sports Hall on Sunday – featuring Wendy Graham (USA) and Stick Shift.
Specials: The irrepressibly enthusiastic Pete Maw will lead the Irish Set Dancing workshops with Pendragon, including a Ceili on Sunday; Madeleine Smith will lead three Running Set workshops; Frances Richardson will lead a Scottish workshop; Geoff Cubitt & John Meechan will lead two practical callers’ workshops; and don’t miss Wendy Graham’s Salsa and Lindy Hop workshops – details under “Displays”.
Festival Orchestra: Musicians are in for a special treat, with Chris, Julie and Nick Dewhurst of 3D leading the Festival Orchestra workshops, culminating in the Festival Orchestra’s “Big Band Dance” on Monday, this year on stage in the Neeld Hall, with the ebullient & inexplicable Pete Hendy calling (who at 6’8” needs no stage!).
Feedback: We are frequently told that Chippenham provides one of the best festival dance programme in the country; if you agree, tell your friends, if not, tell us. We need your feedback (good & bad) and suggestions, by email or via the web, to ensure that we keep improving & developing.
For souvenirs of dances or tunes experienced during the festival, many artists will be happy to sell their books & CDs; and don’t forget to visit “Folk Sales” at Wiltshire College.
