Some Q & A's
For over 45 years the festival has been organised by a huge team of volunteers. They work throughout the year, without pay, in order to bring what has been described as "the best event Chippenham could ever want".
What do we do for Chippenham?
The Festival brings people in from the local area, the county, the country and abroad. More than that, they all spend money! This has been proved by doing economic impact studies that have been ratified within business and through governmental agency figures and statistics. Our calculations show that the festival creates in excess of £1,000,000 pounds into the local economy - EVERY year.
How can we be sure of these figures?
This does sound like a lot of money and many people say: "...if you are bringing in that much why do you need support?"
The answer to that is - that we are not getting any of it! The shops, pubs, Hotels, B&B, traders, local businesses, local camp sites, garages, suppliers and supermarkets all gain a huge rise in their annual income over that weekend because of the festival.
Where does the money come from?
In order to try and explain, here is an example.
If a family of four comes from Derby for a 4 day visit to the festival, then each of the adults have been proven to spend a minimum of £43 per day and half that for each of the children.
Multiply that by the number of people visiting the festival and the fact that some of that money will be spent again by the traders and their staff in Chippenham that weekend and it doesn't take long before spending reaches one million pounds in the town and the area.
How Can you help?
The festival currently costs around £160,000 annually to put on.
Each year, we have to find the huge difference between the ticket sales to the indoor events and the amount needed to put on all the free stuff that happens at the folk festival. The free stuff usually costs us about £38,000!
Funding covers about 30% as we have already said and trade concessions on Island Park cover a further proportion of the remainder.
We make collections from the 20,000 people that visit the free events each year but even that only brings in about £2,100.
A few traders in the town support the festival but in 2016 only amounts to around £700!
Surely there has to be a better way of balancing the books.
Local traders and business support is our one chance of making sure the festival continues to flourish for the future.
Many Folk Festivals in th UK have moved out of their host town to green field sites which allows the festival to control all of the income. Consequently their host town's benefits drop significantly that weekend.
However, we want to be in the town centre because our customers like the range of options they can benefit from within a town.
In addition to that they feel much more part of the community when they are here.
You can contribute, even in a small way, to support of the festival.
Below are a range of options to show your support for one of the country's best known traditional festivals.
If you require someone to visit and discuss options, however large or small then do not hesitate to contact us. We will visit you at a time that is most convenient to you.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and we look forward to hearing from you and, hopefully, working with you.
